Limestone cliffs and white-sand coves 15 min from the centre. Galapinhos is the postcard beach; summer parking is brutal.

Livramento Market

Called one of the world's most beautiful fish markets by USA Today. Go in the morning, Tuesday to Sunday.

Sado Estuary Dolphins

Around 30 resident bottlenose dolphins live in the estuary year-round. Boat trips from the dock, ~2h.

São Filipe Castle

16th-century fort above the city, looking over the Sado and Tróia. Free entry; the tiled chapel is worth seeing.

Tróia Peninsula

Fine-sand beaches across the estuary. Passenger ferry from Terminal Sul in ~15 min.

The city's signature dish. Casa Santiago (the choco 'cathedral') and O Farol, both downtown.

Moscatel de Setúbal

The region's fortified sweet wine. Taste and buy at José Maria da Fonseca, in Azeitão (10 km).

Queijadas de Azeitão

Small cheese tarts with cinnamon and lemon. Queijadas Oliveira in Azeitão has been making them for over a century.

Stalls inside the market cook the fish you just saw. Simple, cheap, fresh.
