Moscatel de Setúbal is a fortified wine made from Moscatel de Alexandria (and, more rarely, Moscatel Roxo) on the Arrábida slopes. DOC since 1907 — one of the world's earliest wine appellations. Sweet but not cloying: raisin, candied orange, honey.
José Maria da Fonseca in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão is the historic house (founded 1834). The museum, the cellar of centenarian casks, and a guided tasting take about 90 minutes and are well worth it. Bacalhôa, also in Azeitão, offers a more contemporary angle with an art and sculpture garden on site. Both are 10–15 min by car from Setúbal.
Moscatel Roxo is rarer and more complex — worth tasting if available; production is tiny. The old bottlings (20-year, 40-year) are reference points in the fortified-wine world.
