Moving to Setúbal

Visas and residency

AIMA (Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum) replaced SEF in 2023 and is still in transition — in 2026 appointment and renewal backlogs remain significant. This is national, not Setúbal-specific. Plan with wide margins.

The visas most used by people moving to Portugal: D7 (passive income such as pension or rental — monthly minimum ≈ €870), D8 (digital nomad — remote-work income of ≈ €3,500/month or more), family reunification (if you have a direct relative with residency), and work or research visas. EU citizens don't need a visa — only a NIF, an address, and a CRUE registration certificate.

The AIMA counter serving Setúbal is usually in Palmela (neighbouring municipality) or Almada. Book online on the AIMA portal — expect 4 to 8 weeks between booking and appointment. Bring all documents in original plus copies.

If you already have a visa issued at a consulate abroad (e.g. D7 issued in London), the first Portuguese appointment is to collect the residence permit, not to apply for the visa again. The distinction matters — you're not 'visa-less' while waiting for the card.
