Setúbal itineraries

Not checklists. Each itinerary has a timetable, distances, real stops — and a plan B when the weather turns.

Setúbal in a day, from Lisbon

The most honest route for anyone leaving Lisbon in the morning and back by evening. Market, choco, castle, an afternoon on the Arrábida. The Fertagus train is the cleanest way in.

A beach day in Tróia

Ferry over in the morning, beach all afternoon, ferry back. Dolphins are almost always sighted on the crossing. Bring sunscreen, water, and flip-flops — the sand is hot.

A weekend in Setúbal

Two slow days: city, market, castle on day one; Tróia or Azeitão on day two. A long dinner each night. Hotel in the old town.

A rainy day in Setúbal

Rain in Setúbal is rare but it happens. This itinerary doesn't depend on the sky. Market, museum, choco, an Azeitão cellar, and sunset if it clears — which it often does.

Moscatel in Azeitão — half a day

Sub-region: Setúbal Peninsula. Houses: José Maria da Fonseca and Bacalhôa. Taste, buy, eat queijadas, back to Setúbal in time for lunch or dinner.
